There are two main reason why you may be looking for mattress for your bunk bed. The first may be that you have just bought a bunk bed and it never came with mattresses so you need to get some that will fit your child’s bunk bed.

The second is that the you already have bunk bed mattresses but they are worn out dirty, saggy and if you have teens a bit stinky. Contrary to popular believe all mattresses do have a life span and when they are dead, they are dead.

Is Your Bunk Bed Mattress Dead?
A “dead” mattress can not only harbor dangerous bacteria, germs and bed bugs, but as they sag can actually hurt your child’s developing back and body, so if your child is complaining about being sore after just getting up then it may be time to buy a new mattress.

So What Type Of Mattress Do I Get?
Well this will depend on several factors which I will discus.

1) The size of your bunk beds.
You should carefully measure the size, that is the width and the length of the mattresses on both the top bunk and the bottom bunk. It is very rare but sometime they are not the same size. And make sure you do not have one of those weird odd size bed that will require a odd size mattress.

Make sure to get a mattress that will fit snugly the bunk bed’s frame, so taking proper and accurate measurements is very important to do before you buy any mattress.

If you are taking about your kids bunk bed then the proper size definitely matters. Choosing a mattress that is smaller than the bunk bed frame can pose a major safety hazard for your child. A child’s head, arm, or leg can easily become wedged between the bunk bed frame and the mattress if it is too small and needless to say this can be extremely dangerous.

2) The type of Mattress – Innerspring vs Foam Mattress
The 2 basic type of mattresses are the innerspring mattress or the foam. There are air mattresses as well, but this is not a good idea for kids as they will find a way to burst it!

Innerspring mattresses are the more common of the two. These mattresses use wire coils withing the mattress for support and durability. The wider the coils the firmer the mattress. You also want to make sure that the bunk bed mattress is high enough to be at least 4 inches from the rail frame for comfort and to prevent hitting the rails in the night.

There are no coils in the Foam Mattresses, as they are made up completely of foam. These mattresses have become more popular over the years, especially because of the memory foam mattresses that are now available. If you decide to go with a foam mattress, keep in mind that the quality of the foam can make a big difference in comfort and support.

Regardless of what type of mattress you will go with make sure you remember that the biggest element that separates a good mattress from a disaster is the padding on top, the “pillow top” that separates you from the springs or the foam, this is your comfort layer. Your kids will thank you for it later on in life.

Full Use Of Limited Space
You can utilize only as much space as a single bed but use that space to sleep over two children. The fact is that you only need very little space to house your precious cargo, and have enough room to accommodate sleep overs and slumber parties.

Even though most of us (unless you were raised in a cave) know what a bunk bed is, for you cave dwellers it is a type of bed or “beds” that is most common in kids rooms or teens’ bedrooms and in bedrooms meant for two people like a collage dorm or God forbid correctional facility. But do not let that last application deter you from having a bunk bed in your kids room, there are no connections between the two.

Bunk beds for kids are also called double deck beds, and “double Decker” but the basic jest of the bed/s is to have one on top of the other in order to make full use of a very small space. These beds or bed spaces are referred to as bunks.

The top bunk or top bed is usually supported by four pillars or poles made of wood, metal or fiber glass. In some of the later bunk bed models the four corner posts can be removed in order that the top bunk and the lower bunk can be detached and used as separate beds. As you kids get older and or you have more room to accommodate two separate bed rooms, then this little feature will com in handy. It seems that as kids get older they get more territorial.

Where Did This Idea Come From?
I think the the concept of bunk beds originated in Egypt, where royalties are believed to use loft beds for sleep. Loft beds are special beds, which are raised high above the ground. Loft beds are still in use today, though they have somewhat evolved in look and some functions. Since there is only the top bunk, the space below the actual bed is usually left open for various purposes such as accommodating a work desk, a cabinet, drawers, or another bed.

Space saving beds are just a great idea for kids or over night visitors, beds such as day beds, day beds with trundle trundle beds for kids, bunk beds with trundle, and loft with trundle are great options to consider also.

Age Limitation For Bunk Beds
I would not recommend you place a child under 6 years of age on the top bunk as this could be dangerous. So choosing the right bunk bed will also depend on the age or ages of your kids. Bunk beds all have protective side rails that can be raised up to prevent rolling off of the bed.

This type of bunk bed will require more space, but they are so cute.  Notice they also have storage space, or draws on the right hand side while desk and chair on the left.

I like the fact that the ladder is off to the side and not over the lower bunk.  This mean happier kids!

Modern Bunk Beds
The latest bunk bed models are now made where each bed is set at a 90 degree angle to each other other rather than right under each other or parallel to each other. This will depend on the space you have available.

The above bunk bed will prevent your kids from encroaching on each others space or bed a lot more than the traditional parallel bunk beds, as the ladder is off to the side.

What ever you choose do not forget to include your child in the purchasing process as they need to have a stake in the choice you will make. This make them feel ownership and embrace the idea if it is a bit of a force feed in the beginning.

First things first, there is a major difference between bunk beds and loft beds. Bunk beds are the most common form of alternative bedding, with an upper bunk stacked above a lower bunk. Some bunk beds stack two same-sized mattresses horizontally, while others stack a twin bed above a full size bed or even a futon that can serve as a larger sleeping or living area. Finally, other bunk beds create a playhouse type environment, with a top bunk running horizontally over top of a vertically running bottom bunk. Children should be at least 35 inches long or two years of age before he or she should be moved to a bunk bed. Also, ground rules should be made regarding the proper conduct involving the bunk bed, since most injuries occur due to roughhousing or horseplay.

Regardless of your age, you should ensure the bunk bed or loft bed you choose has two sets of guardrails and a sturdy ladder that can support your weight. The guard rails are critical, even though your bed may reside next to a wall. More so with children, but occasional with teens or adults, bunk beds or loft beds without a guardrail next to the wall can cause the sleeper to slip between the bed and the wall during their sleep. Also, a guardrail on the other side of the bed is critical, since anyone can fall out of a bed while asleep.

For children, the guard rail should be no more than three and a half inches above the mattress. If the guard rail is too far away from the mattress, the occupant can slip between the mattress and the rail, resulting in a fall. Also, the guard rail should run at least five inches above the mattress to prevent the occupant from rolling over top of the rail.

Keep in mind there are a variety of bunk beds and loft beds on the market. Younger kids may enjoy the activity themed bunk beds, while teens may desire a bed that incorporates a loft instead of a bottom bunk. Also, the size of the room is directly associated with size of the bunk bed or loft bed. Although having a double or queen size bed may be luxurious in comparison to a tiny twin, but carefully think of the available space before choosing.

An air mattress is a valuable alternative because you can take them wherever you go, similar to a camping jaunt, but the main downfall is that you cannot use them for a long period of time.

If you do not have any other options, you can just go to your local furniture store and try to find the cheapest mattresses possible. Cheap mattresses, hidden in a stockroom, are usually of poor quality, and not good value for your money. They pair the better and higher priced mattresses they want to sell with the bedroom ensembles. Although prices may be slightly higher than other venues, a cheap mattress purchased from a furniture store is most likely going to feel much better than ones found elsewhere. It may even be the best mattress you’ve ever felt.

If you are searching for a lower price on a mattress, there are many different options available to you. It shouldn’t take long to find a bargain when shopping for a mattress.
